Mr. Gefaell joined Pillar in 2023. John Gefaell has over 25 years of (re)insurance experience, having spent nearly his entire career as a reinsurance broker. Mr. Gefaell joined Pillar after spending 10 years with Guy Carpenter & Company, LLC in New York City where he was a Managing Director focused on property retrocession placements, property catastrophe treaty business and large, complex commercial insurance placements.
Prior to joining Guy Carpenter, Mr. Gefaell co-founded two US reinsurance broking companies, Access Reinsurance and Alternative Reinsurance Solutions. Both companies focused on placing property retro, property treaty, Industry Loss Warranties, specialty reinsurance and structured retro and reinsurance products.
Beginning in 2009, prior to joining Pillar and in his role as a reinsurance broker, Mr. Gefaell worked closely with Pillar on a multitude of transactions including placement of Pillar’s fronting relationship with Hannover Re.
Mr. Gefaell holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Business from Colorado State University.
